The answer to this question can seem very mysterious, but at the same time almost obvious: "I'm me, of course!". In this trail we will consder questions such as:
what makes us who we are? our genes? our memories? life experiences?
what parts of identity are visible, which are invisible?
how do the groups we belong to affect our identity?
do we have one identity, or many?
On our trail we will visit the Cunningham Dax gallery to look at how art is used to express and explore our identity. We will also make some art of our own (individually and as a group) to help us get a handle on these strange and interesting questions.
What makes up or influences our identity? Post your ideas here!
The answer to this fundamental question can seem very mysterious, but at the same time almost obvious: "I'm me, of course!"
In this trail we will look at what makes us who we are. We will introduce some basic ideas from psychology and visit the "Mind" exhibition at the Melbourne Museum to give us some tools to help us think about the topic. In the afternoon we will visit some art galleries to look at how people use art, the form of self-portraits, to represent who they are. Along the way to answering out big question, we will look at two sub-questions:
how do the groups we belong to affect our identity?
is our identity something that we are born with, or does it get "made" by our life experiences?
ART: What is it to be creative? Is there more to art that meets the eye? Can an idea be art? We will delve into conceptual art, the philosophy of art and most probably make a bit of art to see how the public reacts. We'll go off to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, explore some laneways and our heads aren't too full of art then we'll probably duck into the National Gallery for good measure.

Public Art Installation Experiment
Become a piece of public art. Or create one. How do people react? Do they take the time to notice? or just walk on by?
Plan an art piece to install in the city. Where will you perform/create your art? What is the message? What materials will you need to organise before we leave?
Remember to keep it clean and sustainable. We need to pack up all traces of the experiment before we leave. Have your proposal checked over by Carly before we go :)
